How to Celebrate the Holidays in Decatur

Decatur and nearby Atlanta have much to offer during the holiday season. If you’re wanting to enjoy some holiday festivities away from your home or apartment, here are some options that you might want to consider. While not all are in Decatur directly, all are close enough to be easily enjoyed.

Skate the Station
Every holiday season, the BB&T Atlanta Open Lot at Atlantic Station is transformed into an ice skating rink. Head there with some friends to enjoy hours of ice skating. Monday through Thursday the rink opens at 4 pm, and Friday through Saturday it opens at 12 pm. Skate the Station stays open through January 21, so you have ample time to enjoy it! It’s even open on Christmas and New Year’s Day!

Bonfire on the Square
On Thursday, December 13 at 7 pm head to the town square in Decatur for a bonfire and marshmallow roast. This popular local tradition includes holiday music sung by local student groups, and you can roast marshmallows while enjoying your community. It is a free event, but reservations are recommended so that the event’s planners can purchase enough marshmallows. If you have trouble finding it, just look for the 20-foot-wide bonfire!

Decatur Tree Lighting
Also hosted in the town square, the tree lighting ceremony is a favorite with Decatur locals. This year’s tree lighting is scheduled for Thursday, December 6. Head downtown for festive events after dark, and stick around to watch the town’s tree come to life.

Visit Winter Wonder Lane
Also part of Atlantic Station in Atlanta, Winter Wonder Lane is a popular local holiday event. Shop at Atlanta’s Christkindl Market, enjoy daily snow fall and nightly Snow Shows and see Santa in Santa’s Cottage. This location serves as the hub for all things holiday related in the Atlanta region, and there are plenty of lights to enjoy so be sure to visit after dark!

From holiday lights to Santa himself, the Decatur and Atlanta areas offer ample holiday fun. Make your plans now to start experiencing the holidays to the fullest in these festive communities.
